SYNOPSIS OF SLOTS LEGISLATION
Prepared by Bruce C. Spizler, Senior Assistant Attorney General and Counsel to the Maryland Racing Commission. The following is a summary of legislation approved in the November 2007 special session of the Maryland General Assembly. The slots program called for in this legislation will take effect if approved by voters in a statewide referendum in November 2008.

Good Night Shirt now 2-for-2 this season in Grade 1 company
Good Night Shirt—the Eclipse Award-winning steeplechaser of 2007—is on course to repeat that title this season, following a near-flawless victory in the $150,000 Iroquois Steeplechase-NSA1 at Percy Warner Park in Nashville on May 10. (more)

Trombetta to judge MHBA Yearling Show
Trainer Mike Trombetta will serve as judge for the 74th annual Maryland Horse Breeders Association Yearling Show, to take place Sunday, June 29 at Timonium Fairgrounds. (more)

Dicey D J wins Hookedonthefeelin Stakes
Dicey D J took command entering the stretch in the $50,000 Hookedonthefeelin Stakes on May 3 at Pimlico and drove to an authoritative three-length score as 0.9-1 favorite in the five-furlong turf event for Maryland-bred 3-year-old fillies. (more)

Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred shines in Preakness competition
The best story, as well as the outstanding photograph, from the 2007 Preakness—as selected by a Maryland Jockey Club panel of judges—appeared in the MHBA’s monthly publication, Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred. (more)

Lexi Star shines in Geisha Stakes
After appearing a beaten horse with a quarter of a mile to the finish line, Stephen Quick’s homebred Lexi Star passed the leaders in the final jump to win the $60,000 Geisha Stakes for Maryland-bred fillies and mares on April 19, opening Saturday of the Pimlico spring meet. (more)

Victory by MD-bred Sheeler highlights opening day at Pimlico
H. Neil Glasser’s Sheeler rallied from off the pace to win the $50,000 Star de Naskra Stakes for Maryland-bred 3-year-olds, the opening day feature at Pimlico on April 17. (more)

Eclipse Award-winning MD-bred Good Night Shirt wins season’s debut
Good Night Shirt, the Maryland-bred who earned the Eclipse Award as the nation’s champion steeplechaser of 2007, captured the $100,000 Georgia Cup-NSA1 at the Kingston Downs Atlanta Steeplechase on April 12 in his first outing this season. (more)

First Maryland-bred 2-year-old winner of 2008

Preemptive Strike, Maryland-bred champion, returns to winner’s circle
Polaris Stable’s Preemptive Strike, the champion Maryland-bred steeplechaser of 2004, returned to the winner’s circle with a three and three-quarter-length score in the Imperial Cup Hurdle Stakes in Aiken, S.C. on March 22. (more)
